Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my initial CADC (Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor) certification?
This requires taking a series of classes that are specific to working with clients with alcohol and/or drug dependence.  For more specific information please visit the Certification Board’s web site at www.certbd.com .

Do I register for the initial CADC classes with you?
No, while we hold the initial CADC classes here at the Center for Prevention & Counseling, we only act as hosts.  NJPN (New Jersey Prevention Network) is the agency with which you register.  They can be reached at 732-367-0611.  These classes are held on Thursdays throughout the year, with a break in late June/early July and another in December/January.  They also have all of the information regarding which classes will be offered at a given time.

I am looking for recertification credits, do I call you?
Yes!  You can contact Shelley at 973-383-4787 or register directly for classes through the web site (there is a small administration fee for using this feature).  Classes are $50 for early-bird registration, and $65 for those registering after the deadline or walk-ins.  While walk-ins are usually accommodated, please be aware that if the class is full we will not accept more students so it is best to pre-register.  This also allows the instructors to prepare the correct amount of handouts etc.  Recertification classes are usually held on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

I would like to become a Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS)?  How do I proceed?
Just as someone pursuing their CADC, you would visit the Certification Board web site www.certbd.com to learn the specific requirements.  Once you have established the requirements, follow the steps in the previous question.  CPS classes are held on every other Wednesday in the spring and fall.

Do you offer continuing education units (CEU’s) for other certifications/licenses?
Our classes are approved by the Certification Board of NJ and may be used for CADC, LCADC, LPC, CPS and MFT (Marriage and Family Therapist) recertification. Additionally, the courses meet the requirements of the NJ Department of Education for Professional Development Hours. For other certifications and licenses, speak directly to the governing board of that discipline to find out how to apply for the credit.

How do I get on the mailing list to receive the class brochure?
To be added to our email mailing list for the class brochure, please contact Shelley at (973) 383-4787, or e-mail us at shelley@centerforprevention.org

What time are the classes held?
Classes begin promptly at 8:30 AM and finish by 3:00 PM.  The instructor will usually give a morning and afternoon break as well as time for lunch.

Are there facilities for keeping food cold or warming food?
No, so if you are bringing your own lunch it is best to bring it in an insulated bag, ready to eat.  Coffee is provided free of charge in the classroom.

Where can I purchase lunch?
There are several local places (within walking distance) to buy lunch at a reasonable price and menus are available upon request.

Do you have driving directions to the Center for Prevention & Counseling?
Yes...go to http://www.centerforprevention.org/directions.htm for driving directions.

Where do I park when I arrive at the Center for Prevention & Counseling?
There is a large municipal lot directly behind our building on Trinity Street.  This lot requires that you pay .25 per hour and a half so you will need to bring quarters with you for the machine.  After parking, put the appropriate amount in the machine and push the green button for your ticket, which you will need to place the ticket in a visible place on your dashboard.  There are also metered spots along the street in front and in back of the building.  Please do not use parking spaces designated for businesses as you will be asked to move (and we don’t want you to miss any class time) or your car may be towed, depending on which agency’s spot you have parked in!

How do I get a scholarship for a class I am taking?

IMPORTANT...NEW CPS SCHOLARSHIP PROCEDURE: For anyone actively pursuing a CPS please note that there is a new procedure when applying for scholarships. While funding is still available through DAS (Division of Addiction Services), The Center for Prevention & Counseling no longer processes the applications.  To get the scholarship application please visit: http://www.njpn.org/cpsscholarships/. Contact NJPN at 732-367-0611 with any questions regarding the scholarship process.
