Asset Building Highlights

Asset Building Workshops

Search Institute’s Asset Building is a concept the Coalition continues to educate community members about through fun and interactive workshops. Assets are the positive building blocks that young people need to grow up to be healthy, happy and caring adults. Research has shown that the more assets a person has, the less likely they are to engage in high-risk behaviors, such as substance abuse, risky sexual activity and violence. See the results of Search’s 2003 survey of almost 150,000 youth across the U.S.

The Coalition hosts Arm Your Child with Assets workshops for parents, teachers, school bus drivers, senior citizens, and other interested community members. We also offer an intergenerational workshop, Building Bridges, for youth and senior citizens. These workshops are designed to educate participants about positive experiences and characteristics that both protect young people from many engaging in risky behaviors and promote positive attitudes and behaviors.

Workshops begin with participants playing "asset' bingo, to help them become familiar with the 40 different assets identified by Search Institute. Interactive skill building is woven throughout the workshop to keep attendees engaged and teach about assets and how to incorporate more into the lives of their children and other youth they come in contact. Some of the ideas parents came up with to increase assets in their community were:

  • Be clear with your boundaries and expectations and set them early. Aim high and lead by example.
  • Spend time with your kids, talk, listen and pay attention to subtle clues kids give.
  • Get involved in a new community group along with other existing groups.
  • Role play with your kids.
  • Let kids come to your house, have an open door.
  • Support them in sports, activities, whatever positive things they are involved with and CHEER them on!

If you are interested in finding out how you can schedule a workshop for your community, school, house of worship, civic group, etc., please call Ayla at 973-383-4787.
