Asset Building WorkshopsSearch Institute’s Asset Building is a concept the Coalition continues to educate community members about through fun and interactive workshops. Assets are the positive building blocks that young people need to grow up to be healthy, happy and caring adults. Research has shown that the more assets a person has, the less likely they are to engage in high-risk behaviors, such as substance abuse, risky sexual activity and violence. See the results of Search’s 2003 survey of almost 150,000 youth across the U.S. The Coalition hosts Arm Your Child with Assets workshops for parents, teachers, school bus drivers, senior citizens, and other interested community members. We also offer an intergenerational workshop, Building Bridges, for youth and senior citizens. These workshops are designed to educate participants about positive experiences and characteristics that both protect young people from many engaging in risky behaviors and promote positive attitudes and behaviors. Workshops begin with participants playing "asset' bingo, to help them become familiar with the 40 different assets identified by Search Institute. Interactive skill building is woven throughout the workshop to keep attendees engaged and teach about assets and how to incorporate more into the lives of their children and other youth they come in contact.
