What
is Youth Leadership Institute?

Youth Leadership Institute is an awesome
group of unique individuals that have joined together to share ideas
of living a healthy and drug-free lifestyle. Youth Leadership Institute consists of about
forty youth from Sussex County high schools and is a part of the Sussex
County Coalition for Healthy and Safe Families. Youth Leadership Institute meets monthly
to discuss any concerns or issues they may have regarding substance
abuse and violence. Members hear from various individuals and families
who have been affected by substance abuse. In their efforts to raise
awareness of substance abuse and violence in our county the youth
volunteer at many community events.
Youth Leadership Institute
has created an exciting
presentation called “Straight
Talk w/ Youth Leadership Institute”.
“Straight Talk”
is an interactive game show that Youth Leadership Institute youth present in a fun and educational
format to 7th and 8th grade middle school students.
Youth Leadership Institute members break the audience into teams to learn new facts and
answer different questions about various drugs. As a part of the presentation,
Youth Leadership Institute also performs a refusal skills skit. This skit allows middle
school students to become aware of the challenges of peer pressure
and substance abuse they may face in high school, and how they can
say “no”. This is a great opportunity for middle school youth to ask
questions to their older peers.

Education for Youth (Youth Leadership Institute) Members "Take It Back!"
Did
you know that each day in the US, more than 5,400 kids under the
age of 16 take their first drink
or that, each year, more than
97,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are victims of alcohol-related
sexual assault
or that alcohol kills more kids under the age
of 21 than all illegal drugs combined??? Youth Leadership Institute thinks it's time to
"Take It Back!"
Youth Leadership Institute, a teen
program of The Center for Prevention's Coalition for Healthy and
Safe Families, has adopted the "Take It Back" movement.
They are working to create change concerning underage drinking.
Youth Leadership Institute members disseminated surveys to adults and peers in our community
and have tallied the results in hopes of raising public awareness
by comparing what adults think is going on versus what adolescents
are really experiencing. Do people really believe underage drinking
isn't an issue or common occurrence with teenagers? Are alcohol
companies and the media contributing to adolescent use?
The culmination
of these efforts was presented at a Town Hall Meeting on March 5,
2008 in Newton.
For the first time ever, the "Take It Back" movement called
together more than 350 youth groups from 49 states to simultaneously
hold youth-led community briefings as a means to call attention
to alcohol as the single most important health issue facing young
people today. Youth Leadership Institute uncovered the truth about underage drinking in
Sussex County!
