About Us!

The mission of Mentoring Plus, a program of the mentoringplusCenter for Prevention and Counseling (CFPC), is to assist children, ages six through 18, reach their highest potential through professionally supported mentoring relationships.  Current research (Search Institute 1996) indicates that in order for children to succeed and develop into competent, confident and caring adults they need specific assets. The more assets young people have, the more likely they are to engage in positive behaviors and better prepared to resist at-risk behaviors, such as drug and alcohol involvement.   Our mentoring relationships build those assets and help children succeed.

Trained professionals recruit, screen, match and support all Mentor Plus matches. These mentoring relationships have documented positive outcomes for the children. Research and anecdotal evidence show that youth who participate in mentoring programs have significant reductions in school absences, better school attitudes and behavior, less drug and alcohol use, less likelihood of engaging in violent behavior, less likelihood of engaging in criminal behavior, more supportive peer friendships and improved parental relationships as compared to similar youth without mentors.  All it takes is a caring adult who can send the message to a child, “You matter and I care about you.”  A mentor is simply a friend … the person who opens the door to a future of possibilities.

What makes Mentoring Plus unique from other mentoring programs is the scope of services that are available to the children and families.  All families seeking a mentor for their child will routinely be screened for suitability in the CFPC’s diverse prevention and intervention programs.

Mentors are all kinds of people---from high school and college students to business people and retirees---who volunteer to spend time with children. They sometime spend as little as one hour each week with a child in need. Through the Mentoring Plus program, both the child and the adult share everyday experiences that enrich the lives of all involved
